NEW EXHIBIT SPARKS FASCINATION

Lynn Meadows Discovery Center has a new exhibit starring everyone’s favorite lighting bug and it is sure to spark a fascination with energy among Coast kids.

LMDC executive director Cindy DeFrances was met with 1000-watt smiles from Ms. Gunter’s class from Bayou View Elementary at the ribbon-cutting for Louie’s Lab-a new interactive exhibit sponsored by the Mississippi Power Foundation.

The red velvet rope barely contained the charged excitement of the room as all the 3rd graders waited eagerly to get their hands on the newest immersive learning experience at Mississippi’s first children’s museum.

Ms. Defrances graciously thanked the museum volunteers and expressed appreciation to Mississippi Power noting that it has been an integral part of the story of LMDC since its inception. “We are grateful to the Mississippi Power Foundation for this generous gift,” said Defrances, “Their contribution will enable Lynn Meadows Discovery Center to continue our mission of inspiring children, families and communities through the arts, interactive educational experiences and exploration.”

CREATIVE, HIGH-WATT LEARNING EXPERIENCE

The class was then invited to join the board members for the ribbon cutting and graciously helped hold the satin red ribbon stretched across the length of the sparkling new learning exposition. Before officially cutting the ribbon, LMDC board member and Mississippi Power Company Finance Director Ann Barrett Ladner humbly expressed her delight in being part of a project that would benefit our community while also propelling the imaginations and dreams of so many children.

“Awesome children learn and make themselves awesome adults and then they come back and make the Coast great!” – Ann Barrett Ladner

As Coast kids move from one technological trend to the next, LMDC continues to evolve while never sacrificing the simplicity of imaginative play or foregoing the importance of sunshine and fresh air.

Encouraging outdoor play, the creative learning extends beyond the former schoolhouse to the gorgeous and accessible grounds where kids can have many adventures including composing in a Music Garden overlooking the Mississippi Sound.

LMDC garnered the recognition of the nation in 2016 as one of only ten recipients of the National Medal for Museum and Library Service and Mississippi Power is helping light the way for more deserving accolades.

“The interactive educational opportunities offered at Lynn Meadows Discovery Center have been nationally recognized,” said Billy Thornton, Mississippi Power’s Vice President of External Affairs and Shared Services. “Louie’s Lab provides another tremendous learning experience for the center’s visitors. The exhibit teaches students about several aspects of energy, from safe practices and efficient ways to use it, to producing it in environmentally friendly ways. Students will benefit from these lessons for years to come.”
